2015 wrapped as a banner year for me. I took on more commercial photography assignments than ever before, shot more photographs in the year than I had in the previous two and, in the end, had my camera equipment stolen. Two out of three ain’t bad right?
Now that life is getting back on track after an exceptionally trying December, I wanted to show off one of the more involved commercial assignments: University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine’s PGME program. We photographed the Post Graduate Medical Education program on-location at Ottawa’s various hospitals taking great care to stay out of the way of any active emergencies while maintaining an accurate portrayal of actual doctors in the post-graduate program for the faculty’s multiple uses. The shoots were spread out over about a month, with 13 different programs and locations. The type of imagery I provided were a sort of environmental portraiture, but also “custom stock.” Some are the kind you’d see on stock photo websites, except they’d be exclusive to the University of Ottawa, and more representative of their actual student-base.
Along with general safety precautions, including wearing protective gowns, gloves, booties and face-masks, we had to ensure strict patient confidentiality. Taping and removing any indications of it during the shoot, and careful proofing of any images that could have inadvertently picked up some details in the background. To this end, we also only used our own models for the images including this cutie!
The following are just a few favourites in nearly 2,000 frames shot for the program:
I couldn’t have done this shoot without the incredible team at the PGME office at the university, as well as my own crack-team of assistants David, Ryan, and Erika who not only hustled for every shot we got, but sometimes had to sacrifice themselves to be in them.
